Preparation for medical school’s accreditation process underway

Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis is gearing up for its upcoming accreditation process. School representatives will welcome members of the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) to the Medical Campus Feb. 19-22, 2023, as part of the accreditation process, which determines whether an institution meets all expected standards.

Faculty, students and staff involved in the undertaking officially launched preparations with a kickoff event Nov. 18 at the Eric P. Newman Education Center.

The LCME requires an extensive internal review before and in preparation for the site visit. This self-study requires careful examination of all aspects of the school, as they relate to medical student education, and identification of strengths and areas for improvement.

The School of Medicine last went through this process eight years ago, at the end of which the school received full accreditation.

University employees and students involved in the effort see it as an opportunity for institutional self-evaluation and improvement. Ultimately, the aim is to show that the program not only meets but exceeds recommended standards for function, structure and performance.
