Simon Cowell health update: Is the music mogul recovering from his injury? Latest

Simon Cowell was supposed to be co-judging ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent tonight but Diversity star Ashley Banjo has had to replace the music mogul following his back injury. Simon shocked his co-judges on BGT and America’s Got Talent when it was revealed that he had broken his back on 8 August. The industry titan fell off his electric bike in the grounds of his Malibu mansion.

The talent show judge broke three vertebrae in the fall and had a steel rod inserted in his back.

Two weeks after the horrific accident, Simon appeared to be on the mend.

The BGT judge was photographed by The Sun travelling to the hospital in the back seat of a car for a check-up.

Around the time of his accident, the star posted on Twitter to provide his followers with an update.

The star said somewhat facetiously: “Some good advice…if you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time.

“I have broken part of my back.

“Thank you to everyone for your kind messages.”

His temporary replacement on America’s Got Talent, Kelly Clarkson, updated fans just a few days after his surgery.

How do I know if I have broken my back?

According to the NHS, depending on where along your spine you have fractured and the number of spinal fractures you have, this will affect where the pain is felt and how you are treated.

“Occasionally, a fracture can occur in your back which you

may not be able to pinpoint to a specific injury/event,” says the health body.

It adds: “These fractures happen because your bones are weaker than normal, most commonly because of a condition called osteoporosis.”

When surgery is required

Depending on the break, you may need to have an operation to move your bones into the correct position and fix them there,” says Bupa.

“Your body will then produce new bone to join the broken parts together,” explains the health body.

You might need an operation to fix a broken bone if:

  • The broken bone or bones are unstable (this means the broken bone has moved or is likely to move, whereas with stable fractures, the damaged bone is still in alignment and not likely to move)
  • Your doctor has tried to get the bones lined up with each other but it hasn’t worked
  • You have a break that won’t heal well without an operation, such as a broken top of your thigh bone (neck of femur)
  • You have more than one break in the same area, such as a broken pelvis and thigh bone
  • You have a large broken bone which affects the muscles and tendons around it, such as a broken knee
  • The fracture is open, which means the broken bone has pierced the skin.

As Bupa explains, your surgeon will make a cut to open the area where the break is. Before they can fix your bones in place, your surgeon will need to move them back into their normal position – this is called reducing the fracture.

How to aid recovery

If you have back problems, one of the most important things you can do is to keep moving and continue with your normal activities as much as possible.

As the NHS explains, it used to be thought that bed rest would help you recover from a bad back, but it’s now known that people who remain active are likely to recover quicker.

“This may be difficult at first, but do not be discouraged – your pain should start to improve eventually,” says the health body.

It adds: “Consider taking painkillers if the pain is stopping you from carrying on as normal.”
