ADRIENE MISHLER was posting poses on YouTube long before everyone and their Facebook friend from high school started recommending “Yoga with Adriene” to deal with pandemic stress.
In fact, Mishler watched her views rack up from country to country as COVID-19 spread.
And here’s the thing: Even she, cheerful yoga instructor, was rattled by the year.
The most difficult thing for me that remains is letting go of any preconceived notion of how my day is going to go.
One of the more beautiful things is that it was very nice to have something that felt useful. There seems to now be sense that people want to contribute more in some way—in our jobs, in our families, in our practices.
Self-care is the moment that you decide to check in with yourself about how you’re doing.
A daily walk with my dog [BARKING IN BACKGROUND] has been where I go for solace and comfort.
I’ve also been leaning into things I used to sneak into an airplane ride. Now I actually have time to pore over The Paris Review instead of just throwing it into my backpack. I know that’s geeky.
We planted a garden this year. Summer flowers, vegetables, tomatoes, herbs. The weather is cooler in Austin now, so we did a second planting with lots of greens. There’s something amazing about planting something and then watching it grow.
I have raised myself to be a pretty remarkable multitasker. At the beginning of the pandemic, I’d be responding to work Slacks while listening to a podcast while also walking the dog. I’m learning to loosen my grip.
After this is over I will continue to choose to do less things with more attention.
