Liver cancer: Expert discusses symptoms and treatments
There are around 6,200 new liver cancer cases in the UK every year, making symptom awareness front and centre.
While early-stage liver cancer doesn’t always trigger noticeable symptoms, more advanced stages may manifest with a combination of signs.
Fortunately, Abbas Kanani, pharmacist at Chemist Click Online Pharmacy told Express.co.uk what to look for.
1. Sudden and unexplained weight loss
Kanani said liver cancer can affect the body’s metabolism and lead to unintended weight loss.
He added: “Cancer cells compete with healthy cells for nutrients, causing a disruption in the normal metabolic processes and resulting in weight loss.”

Therefore, any sudden and unexplained weight loss that occurs without changes in your diet or physical activity could be a warning sign.
2. Persistent abdominal pain
As liver cancer progresses, the tumour can start growing in size and invade surrounding tissues, including the liver capsule and nearby structures.
“This can cause pain or discomfort in the upper right abdomen, where the liver is located,” the pharmacist said.
He instructed looking out for any persistent pain or discomfort on the right side of your upper tummy.

3. Jaundice
Kanani said liver cancer can obstruct the bile ducts, which are responsible for carrying bile (a substance produced by the liver) to the intestines.
He continued: “When the bile flow is blocked, bilirubin accumulates in the body, leading to jaundice.”
This tell-tale sign can turn your skin and the whites of your eyes yellow.
4. Feeling tired and weak
Once the bile ducts become obstructed, the normal liver function can become impaired, including the production of proteins that are essential for energy and muscle function.
According to the pharmacist, this can result in feelings of fatigue and weakness that occur despite having an adequate rest.
5. Swelling in the abdomen and legs
Kanani added that liver cancer can also trigger disruption to the normal flow of blood through the liver and cause an increase in pressure within the blood vessels. He said: “This can result in fluid accumulation in the abdomen (ascites) or legs (oedema), leading to swelling and discomfort.”
While these symptoms don’t guarantee you have liver cancer, it’s important to get checked.
The pharmacist added: “Discuss your symptoms with your GP as soon as you can so they can do a physical examination, review of symptoms, medical history and possibly order diagnostic tests.
“Follow any medical advice given and remember, early detection and prompt medical attention are crucial for the best possible outcomes.”
