Hair loss can be a natural part of the ageing process, and most of the time, it’s nothing to worry about. You could lose up to 100 hairs on your body every day, without even noticing. But you could prolong the life of your locks by regularly using avocado oil, it’s been claimed.

Losing your hair could be caused by a number of different conditions, said the NHS.

Stress, weight loss, or even an iron deficiency can lead to some form of hair loss.

But, there are some home treatments you can use that might help to prevent some types of hair loss, including alopecia.

One of the easiest ways to stimulate hair growth at home is to simply use avocado oil, it’s been claimed.

Avocado oil is packed full of nutrients that improve the health of your hair.

It’s been claimed to lubricate hair follicles, protecting them from hair breakage.

The oil coats the hair with fatty-acid-rich moisture, providing a natural barrier to anything in the environment that might be damaging your hair.

But, you don’t just have to plop the oil on your hair to reap the benefits.

Natural hair mask

The easiest way to benefit from avocado oil’s properties is to simply coat your entire scalp with it.

Leave it in your hair for at least 15 minutes, or just sleep with the hair mask overnight.

Scalp massage

If you’re feeling stressed out, a nice head massage is a great way to use avocado oil.

Gently use the oil to massage directly onto your scalp, aiming to cover as much ground as possible.

Carrier oil

Avocado oil could be used as a carrier oil, to gain double the benefit.

Simply combine it with a few drops of rosemary or peppermint oil – both of which protect against hair loss – and apply the mixture as a hair mask.

“Using avocado oil in your daily hair care routine is a surefire way to decrease dryness and improve texture no matter your hair type,” said nutritionist Dr Josh Axe.

He wrote on his website: “Avocado oil comes from pressing the inner flesh of an avocado fruit.

“As you may already know, avocado and its oil are rich in beneficial nutrients that can boost your health, both inside and out.

“The fatty acid content of avocado oil is one of the main reasons why it can do so much to improve dry scalp and hair conditions. It naturally conditions and strengthens the hair, leaving it healthier and shinier.”

Losing your hair isn’t necessarily something to be worried about.

But, on rare occasions, it could be a tell-tale sign of another medical condition.

You should speak to a doctor if you suddenly start losing your hair, or if you develop bald patches.

There are other treatments for hair loss – including transplants – but they aren’t available on the NHS, and you’ll need to pay for them.
