Around one in every four adults in the UK are obese, according to the NHS.
The term obesity is defined as being very overweight, with a lot of body fat.
The most common way of knowing if you’re obese is to check your Body Mass Index (BMI), which compares your height and weight.
While BMI isn’t an ideal metric for measuring your weight – because people with very little fat and large amounts of muscle could be described as obese – it’s a good indicator of whether you’re roughly a healthy weight.

Drink lots of water
It may seem simple, but drinking water is a great way to avoid adding too many calories to your diet.
Some people confuse feeling thirsty with hungry, said the NHS, which means they snack instead of having a quick drink.
Water is the best and healthiest choice of drink for quenching your thirst, but plain tea, fruit tea and coffee could also be healthy, provided you don’t add any sugar.
Everyone should aim to drink between six and eight glasses of fluid every day.

Use smaller plates
Some people may find that using smaller plates helps them to eat less food at mealtimes.
You may be able to gradually get used to eating smaller portions, which is key to losing weight.
Cutting down on the amount of calories you eat should help you to lose weight.
It takes the body about 20 minutes to tell the brain that it’s full, so also try eating slower.
Cut back on alcohol
Alcohol is one of the worst offenders for weight gain, because they contain a lot of hidden calories.
A pint of beer has the same number of calories as the average chocolate bar.
Try setting limits on the amount of alcohol you drink each week, and slowly work backwards.
All adults should avoid drinking more than 14 units of alcohol every week.
Eating fibre-rich foods
Fibre foods are perfect for helping people to lose weight, according to the NHS.
They make you feel fuller for longer, which means you aren’t tempted to snack between meals.
Don’t forget to exercise
There are some calories in your body that diet alone won’t be able to get rid of, which is why it’s so important to add an exercise plan to your weight loss diet.
You’re still allowed to go outside for exercise during the national lockdown, so make the most of it, provided you stay socially distanced.
