What is matcha?

Why is matcha a healthier alternative to coffee?

Green tea has a reputation for being healthy because of its reduced caffeine and increased antioxidant content.

With a high caffeine concentrate like matcha – it can seem impossible that this green variety could offer so many positive benefits too.

In her book, The Atlas of Tea, Kris explains that there are three natural components found in tea which affect the way we absorb caffeine.

These include:

  • Polyphenols such as catechins
  • Antioxidants
  • Amino acid L-theanine

When we drink caffeinated tea rather than coffee, the physical effects such as a racing heart or shaking limbs are much less dramatic, but increased energy levels can be prolonged, says Kris.

What are the health benefits of matcha?

As the go-to drink for Buddhist monks, matcha is renowned for its ability to provide focus and alertness.

Drinking matcha offers a range of internal benefits, ranging from improved brain function to a healthier heart.

According to the medically accredited website Healthline, there are five proven benefits of matcha:

  1. Antioxidant intake – antioxidants help to prevent cell damage and lower the risk of some chronic diseases including Parkinson’s and Dementia.
  2. Liver protection – green tea extract can reduce liver enzymes which are a marker of liver damage
  3. Boosts brain function – attention, reaction time and memory have all been proven to improve with regular matcha consumption
  4. Lower cholesterol – matcha can reduce ‘bad cholesterol’, reducing the risk of heart disease
  5. Weight loss – green tea can boost the metabolism and increase energy expenditure
