On social media, theirs is a relationship most covet. Two of the world’s biggest stars, two of the most genetically blessed individuals, and two people whose love for one another seems to practically transcend the screen, even enveloping those who are simply scrolling through their feed. The union of Dwayne Wade and Gabrielle Union is a powerful one, but despite all appearances of being a picture-perfect couple, the two have certainly experienced struggles in their relationship. Never one to turn her social media platform into a highlight reel of her greatest hits and hits only, Union has instead been open with her followers about her own issues and in a recent excerpt from her new memoir, she’s giving fans a greater insight into her journey to motherhood and how her fertility issues impacted her relationship.
Taken from her memoir, “You Got Anything Stronger?” Union detailed her fertility struggles that included suffering numerous miscarriages. It was only later that she was told by a doctor in 2016 that her best chance for a healthy baby would be via surrogacy following her diagnosis of adenomyosis, a condition that affects the uterus.

For Union though, the option of surrogacy was a choice she wasn’t ready to pursue and so she continued with more IVF cycles and losses. At one point, she even discussed the option of undergoing a treatment that would have had intense side effects on her body and given her a 30 per cent chance of bringing a baby to term. “It was something my husband said that changed my mind,” she wrote. “I told him I wanted to try the drug. Dwayne was quiet, then said, ‘You’ve done enough.’”
Union added, “I read those words now and hear them again. I didn’t receive this as concern at the time. It sounded like an acknowledgment of failure. Because at that point I would have sold my soul to get out of the endless cycle of loss.”
In 2018, Union finally decided to pursue surrogacy and welcomed a baby girl, Kaavia James, in November of 2018. When she took to Instagram to announce the birth, she posted a picture with the caption: “We are sleepless and delirious but so excited to share that our miracle baby arrived last night via surrogate and 11/7 will forever be etched in our hearts as the most loveliest of all the lovely days.”

While the birth certainly brought immense joy to Union, her memoir also discusses the struggles she encountered in her relationship with Wade, who welcomed a baby Xavier with another woman before they were married. “In 2013, before we were married, Dwayne had a baby with another woman. It should go without saying that we were not in a good place at the time that child was conceived. But we were doing much better when he finally told me about the pregnancy.”
“To say I was devastated is to pick a word on a low shelf for convenience,” she added. “There are people – strangers I will never meet – who have been upset that I have not previously talked about the trauma. I have not had words, and even after untold amounts of therapy I am not sure I have them.”
Ultimately though, Wade worked hard for Union’s forgiveness, and worked for it every day. “Each day, he had worked to be forgiven, and I had chosen to do so. And part of this journey of making peace with our love is also making peace with ourselves.” The pair later wed in 2014 and since then, their relationship has only gone from strength to strength and the pair regularly discuss marriage and parenting.
