‘After Doing WW, I Used MyFitnessPal And Did Beachbody Workouts To Lose 65 Pounds In 17 Months’

My name is Courtney Llewellyn (@courtney_getsfit), and I’m 26 years old. I’m from the east coast in Quebec, Canada, and I work at a seafood processing factory. I struggled with my weight for my entire life until I tried WW, then started counting calories, tracking my meals, and practicing portion control with MyFitnessPal.

Before my weight-loss journey began, I struggled a lot with different issues as a result of being overweight. As a teenager, I had a lot of self-esteem and confidence problems that led to me being a very unhappy person.

On top of that, I always felt extremely sluggish and tired. I would experience pain in my knees and back from walking up too many stairs. Heart disease and diabetes also run in my family, so I knew I didn’t want to end up in that position at a young age. I knew I had to change something before I ended up sick.

My turning point was in August 2019, when the biggest pair of pants I owned, a size 20, were suddenly too small.

I had nothing that fit and nothing I felt comfortable in. I felt so sad and discouraged at that moment. I knew I needed to start showing myself love, from the inside-out.

I started my weight loss journey by focusing solely on nutrition.

At that time I had joined WW (formerly known as Weight Watchers) to help me develop better eating habits. I chose WW because a lot of people that I followed on Instagram at the time were doing it, and it seemed to be working for them.

I didn’t use WW for very long before I transitioned into calorie counting using the MyFitnessPal app. It’s a better fit for me and has been working perfectly.

Here’s what I eat in a day now.

  • Breakfast: Low-sugar vanilla yogurt with low-fat granola and a tablespoon of peanut butter.
  • Lunch: Two slices of smoked turkey on two slices of white bread with Miracle Whip, spinach and a slice of cheese.
  • Snack: Usually a protein bar.
  • Dinner: Two pork chops cooked on the barbecue, half a cup of white rice and a cup of frozen vegetables (usually a broccoli and cauliflower mix).

I started working out in January 2020. When I first started, I was working out about four days a week.

When I started my journey, I was solely focused on diet. Now, I work out about six days a week following Beachbody workout programs. These include cardio and weight lifting, as well as recovery and yoga days. I mostly prefer cardio programs—I absolutely *love* a good sweat and elevating my heart rate.

These three changes made the biggest difference in my weight-loss results.

  • I started tracking my food. When I started to track all my meals, I realized how easy it was to overeat without even knowing it. Tracking my food has helped me with portion control.

  • I started exercising for the right reasons. I decided to move my body because it made me feel good, rather than because I hated my body. It was difficult to make this mindset change, but it was entirely rewarding.

  • I made it known that I was trying to be more healthy. I told my friends and family about my journey. The support they gave was really helpful. It allowed me to have extra accountability so I was set up to be more successful.

So far I’ve lost 65 pounds in 17 months. I am halfway to my goal!

I want other women to know that they’re not alone. You don’t have to necessarily love yourself where you are, but accepting yourself will give you the power to want to start choosing a healthier life for yourself.

I’ve learned that weight loss doesn’t have to be an all or nothing mentality. Start with one small change and work your way to other goals. When things get rough, don’t give up! It is part of the rollercoaster ride that is a weight-loss journey.
