Biotin, also known as Vitamin B7 or Vitamin H, helps the body to convert food into energy. Lots of hair growth vitamins contain Biotin, and the ‘skin, hair and nails’ supplements on the market will be primarily made up of Biotin… but does Biotin REALLY help your hair grow longer?

Biotin is an essential nutrient found in a variety of foods, including eggs, seeds, nuts and cauliflower.

While most of us get enough Biotin from our diets, some people are deficient or don’t get enough of the vitamin.

A spokesperson from hair-growth product brand Watermans explained: “Biotin is water-soluble and mainly helps to break down the proteins, fats and carbohydrates in food and turn them into energy.

“As well as supporting healthy metabolism, Biotin is a key nutrient for maintaining healthy hair, skin and nails.”

The regular daily recommended dosage of biotin is between 30 and 100 micrograms for adolescents and adults.

Anything more than that will leave your body when you go to the toilet, so there’s not much point in taking supplements if you already get enough.

However, Watermans suggest that applying Biotin-based shampoos and products can further strengthen their hair.

Pregnant women can become biotin deficient (although this is rare) and it is sometimes recommended for these women to take a prenatal vitamin that contains biotin during pregnancy.

If you’re struggling with low levels of biotin, you’ll likely have:

  • Thinning hair
  • Brittle nails
  • Skin prone to infections
  • Soreness around eyes nose and mouth

Does biotin REALLY help your hair grow longer?

Several studies have explored whether Biotin supports hair growth, and trichologists have spotted links.

The haircare experts said: “Biotin is thought to promote stronger and possibly even thicker hair.

“As strong hair is less prone to breakage, hair can grow longer and thicker, and still look healthy.

“Although Biotin doesn’t stop hair loss directly, many dealing with hair thinning take Biotin supplements to help encourage natural hair growth.

“If you’re struggling with thinning hair and increasing your Biotin intake, you should expect to see results after four months.”

If you’d rather not take a supplement, Biotin can be found in the following foods:

  • egg yolk
  • organ meats (liver, kidney)
  • nuts, like almonds, peanuts, pecans, and walnuts
  • nut butters
  • soybeans and other legumes
  • whole grains and cereals
  • cauliflower
  • bananas
  • mushrooms
