COVID-19 rates are steadily climbing down in the UK, as health workers deliver nearly half a million vaccines per day. More than 15 million people have now had at least one jab, providing 60 to 75 percent immunity. Testing has gathered steam as well, with authorities rolling out enhanced sites to trace new variants.
Do you need to report a Covid test yourself?
Officials have fine-tuned testing compared to the beginning of the pandemic.
Labs conduct more than 500,000 tests per day, and in total, have now processed nearly 81 million, according to data from Gov.uk.
With surge testing now in place for several regions, people may wonder how to report the results.
There are two different types of tests UK authorities used to detect COVID-19.
They include:
- Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests
- Lateral flow device (LFD) tests
While equally effective, the former of the two tests check genetic material and requires lab processing.
Testing personnel then inform people whether or not they have tested positive and what to do next.
Lateral flow device tests detect antigen proteins and provide results within 30 minutes.
But they require people to administer them via home testing kits.

These are now much easier to procure, especially in areas where officials have introduced surge testing.
People must report the results of a lateral flow test with every use and as soon as possible.
They ultimately help officials build a picture of how infection rates look in any given area.
The process of reporting results is straightforward and requires people to visit the Government’s website.
From there, they disclose a range of details, including who received the test, why, where they live and more.
Depending on the result, people may need to self-isolate with their household.
Anyone who has tested positive must isolate immediately, whether they have symptoms or not.
Full isolation lasts for ten days, which includes the day someone has taken the test.
