Statins do more good than harm, according to risk-benefit review

For their study, published in The BMJ, data from 62 clinical trials – with a total of 120,000 participants – were examined. There was a small increased risk of self-reported muscle symptoms but these were not associated with clinically confirmed muscle disorders.

Statins were associated with slightly raised chances of liver or kidney dysfunction and eye conditions.

But the paper states that the absolute increases in the risks were “small” and “did not outweigh the reduction in the risk of major cardiovascular events” such as heart attacks and strokes.
