Diabetes is a common condition that affects more than four million people in the UK, and 90 percent of all cases are caused by type 2 diabetes. You could be at risk of high blood sugar if you have an unquenchable thirst, it’s been revealed.
Type 2 diabetes could be caused by the body not producing enough of the hormone insulin, or the body not reacting to insulin.
Without enough of the hormone, the body struggles to convert sugar in the blood into usable energy.
It’s crucial, if you think you may have diabetes, to speak to a doctor as soon as possible.
One of the most common warning signs of diabetes is excessive thirst.
Feeling persistently thirsty, or polydipsia, is one of the first diabetes symptoms to reveal itself.
It’s caused as a direct response to higher than normal blood sugar levels.
Polydipsia symptoms include having an unexplained thirst, regardless of how much water you drink.
You could also be at risk of the condition if you pass more than five litres of urine everyday, as a result of drinking so much water.

“Polydipsia is the term given to excessive thirst and is one of the initial symptoms of diabetes,” said medical website Diabetes.co.uk.
“It is also usually accompanied by temporary or prolonged dryness of the mouth.
“If you feel thirsty all the time or your thirst is stronger than usual and continues even after you drink, it can be a sign that not all is well inside your body.
“If you don’t have diabetes, you should see a doctor if the reason for thirst cannot be explained and particularly if you have other symptoms of diabetes – in paticular polyuria [passing more urine than normal] and polyphagia [an increased appetite].”

Everyone should be drinking around two litres of water everyday.
If you find that you’re drinking more than that, and still feel thirsty, you should consider speaking to a doctor.
But, just because you have an unquenchable thirst, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have diabetes.
Polydipsia could also be caused by dehydration or certain infections.

Many people may have diabetes without even knowing it, because the signs and symptoms don’t necessarily make you feel unwell.
Common diabetes symptoms include having cuts or wounds that take longer to heal, having an unquenchable thirst, and passing more urine than normal.
You should speak to a doctor if you’re worried about the warning signs or symptoms of diabetes, or if you think you may be at risk.
Diagnosing the condition early is very important, because patients are more at risk of some deadly complications, including heart disease and strokes.
