How to live longer – This Morning doctor explains FOUR key lifestyle swaps

The key to living longer could be to eat a healthy, balanced diet – including at least five portions of fruit and vegetables every day – as well as regular exercise. ITV This Morning’s Dr Punam Krishan has revealed the top four ways to boost your lifespan.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a well-rounded diet is crucial to prolonging your lifespan.

You could also boost your lifespan by doing regular exercise. It’s the “miracle cure” we’ve all been waiting for, according to the NHS.

Making some small diet or lifestyle changes could help to increase your life expectancy and avoid an early death.

But one of the most important ways to make sure you live longer is to make sure you get plenty of sleep, said Dr Krishan.

Making sure you’re sleeping enough is just as important as your diet and exercise lifestyles, she said.

Sleep helps with high blood pressure, weight loss, and even some cancers.

It’s also crucial to plan for your life ahead and to make sure you’re mentally engaged with day-to-day life.

If all else fails, simply imagine yourself as a car, said Dr Krishan.

“My top tips would be to get good sleep,” she said. “Getting a good night’s sleep is just as important as exercise and eating well.

“Making sure you get your seven to eight hours of sleep regularly has been shown to reduce your blood pressure and improve your immune system. It can actually help you to lose weight, and it can even stave off some cancers.

“Think of yourself like a car. Life is like a long journey ahead of you, and you want that journey to be as comfortable, safe and smooth as possible.

“Yes, there will be bumps along the way, but you need to make sure you’re fueling yourself with the right stuff, making regular pitstops for a rest, that you’re servicing yourself and making sure every part of it is working well, and most of all, make sure you’re having fun along the ride.”

Dr Krishan’s top four tips to live longer

  • Get a good night’s sleep
  • Plan ahead
  • Stay Connected
  • Imagine you’re a car

Planning ahead involves making small changes to your lifestyle now so that it doesn’t feel like a chore in years to come.

Staying connected, meanwhile, means staying on top of your mental health.

Mental wellbeing is just as important as physical health, she said.

Try to keep social engagements alive, and try to phone your loved ones as much as possible.

Meanwhile, regular exercise is a crucial aspect of improving overall health and helping you to live longer.

People that do regular exercise are up to 50 percent less likely to develop type 2 diabetes and some cancers, said the NHS.

It may even slash the chances of coronary heart disease and stroke by up to 35 percent.

All UK adults should aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity every week.
