Melissa Rycroft’s Breast Implant Removal Post Celebrates Her ‘Itty Bitty Titty Comittee’ Status

Bodies and body image are complicated — and they (along with what we want them to look like) evolve as we get older. In a trend of celebrities who had previously opted for breast implants getting them removed, we get a chance to see how that change of desire, lifestyle and other factors can lead to people choosing to make those changes for their bodies.

Following Chrissy Teigen who removed her implants (and shared her pre-COVID-19 test experience), Bachelor alum Melissa Rycroft has joined the club of celebrities who have taken out their implants (and shared their experience and recovery with fans).

“I’m officially a member of the Itty Bitty Titty Committee again — Implants are OUT,” Rycroft Strickland wrote on her Instagram next to a photo of her recovering in her gown and mask. “After one reconstructive surgery, and one implant that refused to settle right (even after reconstruction), my body was telling me they didn’t want these implants in! Thank you for all the well wishes and prayers! I’m pretty achy, but recouping well. For now….I’m off to sleep again”

Breast implants do require maintenance over the years and procedures to remove them are quite common.

.”Breast implants are not lifelong devices and it is important to have them exchanged or removed approximately every 10-15 years. This decision is typically based on the individual and the patient’s needs and desires,” according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

According to the 2018 Plastic Surgery Statistics Report, a little more than 48,000 of these procedures were reported in that year. Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does note that there are risks to getting breast implants that include implant complications (pain, change in the nipples), scar tissue around the implant affecting how it settles, potential for the implant to rupture and connective tissue diseases among others. For many people who initially get breast implants there is also a need for additional surgeries, including removal.

“Removal of a breast implant, with or without replacement, is one type of reoperation. The life of breast implants varies by person and can’t be predicted. You may need to have your implant removed at some time over the course of your life because of one or more local complications,” according to the FDA. “After removal, some women do not choose to replace their implants.”
