More than 60,000 canisters of a protein powder beloved by Jennifer Aniston are being recalled over fears they may contain plastic shards.

Vital Proteins issued a voluntary recall on its unflavored collagen peptides powder, urging customers to throw away affected cans immediately.

The recall notice said that the Collagen Peptides containers were sold at US stores across 20 states between April 17 and 24 and carry a best-by date of January 2028.

Consumers can find out whether their powder is one of those recalled by checking its batch label, found printed in black writing just below the barcode on the back of the canister. The batch code for the recalled canisters is 30095993HA.

Officials warn that people who unwittingly swallow the plastic shards could face lacerations, or cuts, to their tongues, throats, stomachs and intestines.

Costco warned that ‘pieces of one blue broken lid may be in one or more canisters’ in its notice announcing the recall.

These had likely got into the $29-a-can products during the manufacturing process when there was a fault with a machine.

There have been no reports of injuries due to the products so far, and the risk to consumers is considered to be ‘low’.

The recalled products were sold across a total of 20 states: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont and Wisconsin.

Some of the items were also sold in Puerto Rico.

Costco said: ‘Please do not consume product marked with the above batch code and best-by date and return the item to your local Costco for a full refund.

‘No other Vital Proteins products or code dates are affected by this issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.’

Vital Proteins is considered one of the most popular protein brands in the US, with revenues exceeding $150million annually.

Jennifer Aniston called it her ‘go-to’ collagen last year and said she always puts it into her morning coffee or smoothie.

She previously said: ‘I do it on an empty stomach for maximum benefits and kick-start my protein intake for the day.

‘This not only helps me recover from workouts easier, but I’ve personally noticed a major difference in my skin, hair and nails due to the hyaluronic acid and vitamin C in this blend.’

Vital Proteins is also the official collagen of the Chicago Cubs in its home city.

Collagen peptides are not the best proteins for building muscle but are purported to help strengthen the hair, nails and skin.

The proteins can also help muscles to recover post-exercise, with the peptides helping to repair the structure of tendons, ligaments and muscles.

Some users even report that they appear ‘younger’ after using the products.
